“No more excuses”: Koala Clancy Foundation calls on NSW Labor to immediately gazette the Great Koala National Park following Greens support.
The Koala Clancy Foundation has today responded to the Australian Greens’ decision to support an Improved Native Forest Management (INFM) method in the Senate, declaring that the NSW Labor Government no longer has any excuses to delay the full creation of the Great Koala National Park.
The Foundation noted that Greens-negotiated improvements to the INFM method, including closing plantation reclassification loopholes and increasing mandatory reductions in logging baselines, helped address key risks previously raised by forest campaigners.
However Koala Clancy Foundation still opposes the INFM method. Foundation President Janine Duffy said:
- “The carbon credits are not additional, and will lead to an increase in carbon emissions, sadly, meaning koalas will suffer from the climate change impacts.”
- “The INFM method is opaque, and will be difficult for the community to hold government to account.”
- “Promises by governments should be actioned honestly, in the shortest time-frame possible, not stalled, and modified until tricky accounting methods are created as has happened with the Great Koala National Park”.
With the federal legislative barrier now removed, the Foundation is turning its full focus toward holding the NSW Labor Government accountable to its 2023 election commitment.
“NSW Labor insisted that the INFM was the final hurdle standing in the way of the Great Koala National Park,” said Ms. Duffy. “Now this hurdle has been cleared, there are zero excuses left and we expect rapid action.”
“Claims by Chris Minns that the carbon credits will fund the Park must be confirmed and legislated to ensure no future government can wriggle out of those too,” she said.
“Over the past week alone, thousands of Australians joined our campaign demanding real habitat protection for koalas. Our community’s voice forced this issue to the top of the political agenda. We will maintain a relentless campaign leading into the upcoming election until the NSW Labor Government formally gazettes the Great Koala National Park, and funding, in law.”
