Our 2026 tree planting season has officially come to a close! After months of hard work across our project sites, we gathered to celebrate everything our community has achieved for wild koalas this year.
Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, landholders, and supporters, we hit a major benchmark:
We have now established 216,905 native trees and plants across key habitat sites!
That brings us to 72.3% of our 300,000 target. With just 83,095 plants left to go, our current pace puts us on track to reach our 2030 goal a full year early during the 2029 planting season.
What We Accomplished in 2026
Every seedling planted helps build safer, connected corridors for wild koalas. Here is a look at what our community achieved this season:
- Restoring River Corridors: We put 44,683 plants into the ground along critical waterways, including 31,508 trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, alongside 13,175 native grasses.
- Community Involvement: 409 volunteers participated this year! While 326 people joined us in the field for planting days, another 86 volunteers took on essential roles like weed removal, seed sowing, and nursery prep.
- Dedicated Labor: Our volunteers contributed 1,139 total hours of hands-on conservation work.
- Habitat Maintenance: Teams removed 64,025 invasive weeds in You Yangs Regional Park to give growing trees room to thrive.
Looking Ahead to 2027
While active planting is finished for the year, site preparation is already underway.
Our primary focus for 2027 is expanding habitat corridors on private land along the Little, Moorabool, and Barwon Rivers. Fertile riverine soil produces nutrient-rich leaves that support koalas year-round and provide critical shelter during heatwaves, droughts, and bushfires.
Our target for the 2027 season is 30,000 new plantings.
